Frequently Asked Questions
About the Tutoring
How is your tutoring different from apps like Duolingo?
Apps teach vocabulary through games and drills. That's great for vocabulary building, but it's not the same as speaking with a real person. In our tutoring, your child practices actual conversation with a native speaker. They get real-time feedback, hearing how words are truly pronounced, seeing how language flows in real contexts. They develop confidence talking to a human - something apps simply can't provide. Apps are an excellent supplement, but they're not a replacement for speaking practice with a tutor.
What's the difference between your 1-on-1 tutoring and group classes?
Group classes teach to the middle of the group. Your shy child might never speak. Your advanced child might get bored. In our 1-on-1 tutoring, we adapt to YOUR child's pace, interests, and learning style. Some kids thrive in groups, but many - especially quieter ones or those learning at different paces - flourish in personalized 1-on-1 lessons. You get custom attention in group classes; you get guaranteed engagement in ours.
Is tutoring better than letting them naturally pick it up from school?
If your child attends Dutch school, they'll learn from immersion - that's valuable. But if they're in an English or other-language school abroad, they won't get daily Dutch exposure. And even kids in Dutch schools can benefit from personalized support if they're struggling or if you want to accelerate their learning. Tutoring complements school, it doesn't replace it.
How much of a difference can 1 hour per week really make?
More than you'd think. Consistency matters more than duration. One focused hour with a native speaker, weekly, produces real progress. You'll see vocabulary growth within 2-3 weeks, improved confidence within 4-8 weeks, and noticeable conversational improvement by 12 weeks. Of course, more frequent lessons mean faster progress, but weekly lessons absolutely work.
Can you help if my child is very shy or anxious about speaking?
Yes, absolutely. Shy children often feel SAFER in 1-on-1 settings than in groups. There's no peer pressure, no embarrassment about mistakes. We work at their pace, celebrate small wins, and gradually build confidence. Many of our quietest learners become the most enthusiastic about lessons because the pressure is off.
Different Situations
My child refuses to speak Dutch. Is tutoring going to force them?
No - forcing never works. Instead, we create an environment where Dutch feels cool and comfortable, not like punishment or school. We learn what motivates your child (games, sports, animals, stories?) and build lessons around that. Often, kids who "refused" at home become willing participants in lessons because it doesn't feel like school or pressure. Many families see attitude shifts within 2-4 weeks.
We're moving to the Netherlands in 6 months. How much Dutch should they know?
Realistically? They don't need to be fluent. Understanding the teacher, following basic instructions, and making friends is what matters most. In 6 months, a focused child can go from beginner to conversational. Our Intensive Prep program is designed exactly for this timeline.
One of us speaks Dutch, the other doesn't. Which method should we use?
This is a common question. OPOL (one parent, one language) works well for many families, but it's not mandatory. What matters: that your child gets enough exposure to Dutch AND has a reason to speak it. Our role is helping you figure out the approach that works for YOUR family, not forcing a method that doesn't fit.
My ex-partner is Dutch and wants the kids to maintain Dutch. Can you help?
Yes. Language maintenance in blended or co-parenting situations is actually very common. We support your child's Dutch progress regardless of family structure. We work with you to create a plan that works with custody schedules and both parents' goals.
We're an expat family who hasn't spoken Dutch at home in years. Can kids relearn it?
Absolutely. They may have "lost" conversational ability, but research shows they still have silent comprehension - they understand more than they can produce. Relearning is much, much faster than initial learning. Many kids go from "I forgot everything" to comfortable conversation in 3-6 months of regular lessons.
We don't speak Dutch as a family - can we still support our child's learning?
Yes. You don't need to speak Dutch to support your child's learning. What helps: encouraging practice, showing interest in what they're learning, maybe learning a few words yourself (kids find this delightful). We provide parent tips for home reinforcement that don't require you to speak Dutch.
Practical Details
What times are lessons available?
We offer flexible scheduling to work with families across time zones. Lessons available: weekday evenings (17:00-21:00 Spain time) and weekends. We can work with your availability. Need a specific time? Let us know in your consultation.
How long are the lessons?
It depends on the program: Foundation Years are 30 minutes, Growing Fluency and Teen Fluency are 45-60 minutes, and Intensive Prep is 2 lessons per week. These lengths are designed based on age and learning capacity.
Do you work across different time zones?
Yes, we work with families worldwide. Spain-based, so our evening hours work well with Europe. For other time zones (Americas, Asia, Australia), we can usually find overlap times. We're flexible to make it work.
What if my child is sick or we need to reschedule?
Life happens. We understand. We ask for 24-hour notice when possible for rescheduling. We keep flexible space in our schedule for this. We're practical about this.
How do you track progress? How will I know my child is actually learning?
We provide: monthly progress reports (what was learned, what's next), specific examples of improvements you'll notice at home, and monthly check-in calls if you want them. You'll hear the difference yourself. By week 4, you should notice change. By week 12, it's usually obvious.
What if my child doesn't like the lessons or we don't feel it's working?
We're always adapting. If something isn't working - lesson time, approach, pace - we change it. If you feel it's not serving your child after 4 weeks, we adjust our approach. We want your child to thrive, not just go through motions. Honest feedback helps us serve you better.
Services & Booking
Do you offer homework help or school preparation?
Our primary focus is conversational fluency and confidence. However, if your child is struggling with Dutch homework for school, we can incorporate some of that into lessons. For exam prep, we can shift focus if that's your goal. Let us know in your consultation.
Can you help prepare for Dutch school entrance exams or tests?
If your child is taking formal exams or placement tests, we can work with you on this. For younger children, it's typically conversational readiness we focus on. For teens, we can do exam-focused preparation. Discuss this in your free consultation.
How do I book a lesson? What's the process?
Easy: 1) Book your free 15-minute consultation, 2) We'll talk about your child and goals, 3) If you want to move forward, we create a personalized plan and schedule, 4) You pay for your chosen program (monthly), 5) Lessons begin. No contracts, you can pause or adjust at any time.
